Drywall Repair: When to DIY and When to Call a Pro
Drywall Repair: When to DIY and When to Call a Pro
Family-owned & operated • 30+ years of hands-on experience • Free estimates
Drywall repair is one of those jobs that looks easy on video and humbles you in real life. A little spackle, a little sanding — how hard can it be? Honestly, some drywall fixes really are simple weekend projects. Others will leave you staring at a lumpy, visible patch wondering where it all went wrong. After 30+ years of fixing walls across Palm Beach County, here’s our honest guide to when you can handle it yourself — and when it’s smarter to call a pro like H3 Industries.
When DIY Makes Sense
Go ahead and tackle it yourself when:
- Nail holes and screw holes. The classic DIY job. A dab of lightweight spackle, a putty knife, a light sanding, and a coat of paint. If you still have the original paint, the fix is nearly invisible.
- Small dings and scuffs. Doorknob dings, furniture scuffs, the odd dent from moving day. Spackle and patience are all you need.
- Hairline cracks at corners. Walls shift, especially in Florida. A thin bead of flexible caulk in a hairline corner crack is a fine afternoon project.
- You have matching paint on hand. This is the quiet dealbreaker. Without the original paint, even a perfect patch will need repainting.
If you’re going the DIY route, apply compound in thin coats rather than one thick one, let each coat dry fully before sanding, and always prime a fresh patch before painting. Raw compound soaks up paint differently than the surrounding wall, and an unprimed patch will show up as a dull spot no matter how smooth it is.
When to Call a Pro
- Large holes. Anything bigger than your fist needs backing, tape, and careful feathering over several coats. Done wrong, it shows under every light angle in the room.
- Water damage. Soft, swollen, or stained drywall means moisture got in — and the leak matters more than the wall. We’ll tell you straight when the underlying issue needs a licensed specialist first.
- Cracks that keep coming back. A crack you patch twice is telling you something. It may be normal settling, or it may need a structural opinion. We’d rather refer you to a trusted licensed pro than patch the same crack a third time.
- Ceiling repairs. Gravity makes everything harder: compound sags, sanding dust falls in your face, and matching ceiling texture is its own art.
- When it has to look perfect. Living rooms, entryways, anywhere the light rakes across the wall — this is where a pro finish earns its keep. Our drywall repair work is feathered, textured to match, and left paint-ready.
The Texture Matching Problem
Here’s the real difference between most DIY patches and professional work: texture. Almost every wall in South Florida has one — knockdown, orange peel, or something in between. Fill a hole without reproducing that texture and the patch will catch the eye forever, even if the fill itself is smooth.
Matching texture takes the right product, the right technique, and practice. Spray-can textures help, but dialing in the pattern and droplet size so it blends with the existing wall is genuinely skilled work. Even experienced painters struggle with it.
Our rule of thumb: if the wall is somewhere you’ll see every day, have a pro match the texture. Closets, garages, and laundry rooms are great places to practice. And once the repair is done, a fresh coat of paint makes everything disappear — that’s why so many of our drywall jobs pair naturally with interior painting.
If you’re staring at a wall and unsure which camp your repair falls into, that’s what free estimates are for. We’ll look at it, tell you straight whether it’s a DIY afternoon or a job worth hiring out.

Hurricane Season Home Prep Checklist for Palm Beach County
Hurricane Season Home Prep Checklist for Palm Beach County
Family-owned & operated • 30+ years of hands-on experience • Free estimates
Hurricane season in South Florida runs from June through November, and if you own a home in Palm Beach County, you know the drill: a storm doesn’t have to hit us head-on to cause trouble. High winds, driving rain, and flying debris will find every weak spot on your home. The good news is that a little prep work goes a long way.
Here’s our home prep checklist — the same one we run through for our own homes and for customers from Palm Beach Gardens to Wellington.
Gutters and Downspouts
Clogged gutters overflow in heavy rain, sending water over the edge instead of away from your home. That water can back up under the roof edge, pour down behind the fascia, and pool around the foundation. Clean out leaves and debris, make sure downspouts are attached firmly, and check that water drains away from the house — not toward it. If your gutters haven’t been cleaned in a while, our gutter cleaning service will get them flowing freely again.
Caulking and Sealing
Florida sun is brutal on exterior caulk. After a few summers, the sealant around windows, doors, and siding dries out and cracks — and driving wind-driven rain will find every one of those gaps. Walk around your home and look for cracked or missing caulk at trim joints, window frames, and where siding meets the house. Fresh, precise caulking keeps water out and keeps your conditioned air in. It’s one of the cheapest forms of storm protection there is.
Doors and Weatherstripping
Every exterior door is a potential entry point for wind and water. Check that doors close tightly and latch properly — a door that doesn’t seal is a door that lets rain blow in. Inspect the weatherstripping for tears, gaps, or flattened spots, and replace what’s worn. Don’t forget the garage door: it’s the largest opening in most homes, so make sure it closes fully and the seals sit flat. If a door sticks, rattles, or won’t latch, our door repair service can get it sealing right.
Fences and Gates
A wobbly fence doesn’t stand much chance against tropical-storm winds — and broken fence sections become projectiles. Walk your fence line and look for loose pickets, leaning posts, and gates that sag or won’t latch. Tightening, re-securing, or replacing weak spots now is a lot cheaper than picking up the pieces after a storm. Our fence repair service handles exactly this kind of work.
Secure the Exterior
Take stock of everything outside your home that isn’t nailed down: patio furniture, grills, planters, toys, and anything stored along the side of the house. In high winds, these items become missiles aimed at your windows and siding. Have a plan for where they’ll go — into the garage, a shed, or stacked and tied down. While you’re at it, give your driveway, walkways, and pool deck a good pressure washing before the season ramps up; clean surfaces shed water better and let you spot cracks or damage you’d otherwise miss.
What H3 Can Help With
Most of this checklist falls right in our wheelhouse: gutter cleaning, caulking and sealing, door repair and weatherstripping, fence repair, pressure washing, and general home maintenance. For work that requires specialized licensing — structural repairs, major electrical, full plumbing, HVAC, or roofing — we’ll point you to trusted licensed pros. That’s how we run our business: honest about what we do, and honest about what we don’t.

How Much Does a Handyman Cost in Palm Beach Gardens?
How Much Does a Handyman Cost in Palm Beach Gardens?
Family-owned & operated • 30+ years of hands-on experience • Free estimates
It’s the question we hear more than any other: “How much is a handyman going to cost me?” We hear it at the door, on the phone, and in emails from homeowners across Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, and Wellington. It’s a fair question — nobody wants to start a home repair project without knowing what they’re getting into.
So here’s our honest answer: it depends. Not because we’re being evasive, but because every home and every job is different. A door that won’t latch and a full room of drywall repair are both handyman jobs, but they take very different amounts of time, materials, and skill. That’s exactly why we offer free estimates on every job — we’d rather look at your project in person and give you a real number than guess over the phone.
In this post, we’ll walk you through the factors that actually determine what a handyman job costs in Palm Beach Gardens, and how our free estimate process works.
The Factors That Determine the Cost
When we price a job, here’s what we’re really looking at:
Type of job. Different repairs call for different skills, tools, and materials. Drywall repair means patching, taping, sanding, and texture matching. Interior painting means prep, primer, paint, and cleanup. TV mounting means stud finding, the right anchors, and cord management. Each has its own workflow — and its own cost profile.
Time on site. This is the big one. A sticking door might take under an hour to adjust. Repainting a master bedroom can take a full day or more. Most handyman pricing comes down to how long a job takes, so anything that adds time — multiple rooms, stubborn old hardware, layers of old caulk to scrape — adds cost.
Materials. Drywall compound, paint, mounting brackets, replacement hardware, caulk — quality materials cost a bit more, but they last. We’ll always tell you what we’re using and why. If you’d rather supply your own materials, we’re happy to work with that too — just mention it when you request your free estimate.
Access and conditions. A second-story gutter, a ceiling fan in a vaulted entryway, or a fence gate buried in landscaping all take more effort to reach and work on. Older homes — common in parts of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach — can have plaster walls or decades of layered repairs that need extra care. None of this is a problem; it just factors into the estimate.
Our Free Estimate Process
Getting a price from us is simple:
- Call us at (561) 201-4132 or send us a message. Tell us what’s going on in your own words — you don’t need to know the technical terms.
- We schedule a visit. For most jobs, we like to see the work in person. Photos help, but nothing beats looking at the actual door, wall, or gutter.
- We explain what we’ll do. You’ll know exactly what the job involves before we start — what’s being repaired, what materials we’re using, and how long it’ll take.
- You get a clear number. No vague ranges, no “we’ll see once we get into it.” Just a straightforward price you can say yes or no to — with zero pressure.
The estimate is free, and there’s no obligation. If the price isn’t right for you, that’s okay — we’ll shake hands and part as friends.
Why “One Price Fits All” Doesn’t Work
You’ll see some companies advertising flat-rate price lists for every job. We don’t do that, and here’s why: a flat rate can’t account for the condition of your home. Patching a small nail hole and repairing a water-damaged ceiling are both drywall repair, but they’re not the same job — and charging the same for both wouldn’t be fair to anyone.
Be cautious of anyone who quotes you a firm price sight unseen. They’re guessing — and guesses tend to grow once the work starts. A real estimate comes from looking at the actual job, in your actual home.
